Our Universe is full of surprises, from ghost remnants of black hole jets to exotic planets around distant stars to Boyajian’s star, the most mysterious star in our galaxy. Drs. Chris Lintott and Laura Trouille will use these unexpected discoveries to explore what we know—and what we don’t—about our dynamic Universe.

Mercury Transit

Transit of Mercury 2019

The planet Mercury will travel across the disk of the Sun from approximately 7:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. this Veterans' Day, November 11, 2019.

Weather permitting, we will open the Dr. Ralph L. Buice, Jr. Observatory to the public from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. We will allow viewing through 8, 10, and 11-inch telescopes fitted with special solar filters. (Do NOT attempt to view the transit through any devices without properly certified solar filters.)

In the event of poor weather conditions, we will project live feeds from other locations onto the dome of the Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  Admission is free!
