Field Marks
  • Small, nocturnal, predatory bird
  • Large, rounded head with ear tufts
  • Yellow eyes
  • Dense streaking on underparts with finer barring
  • Some birds have rusty plumage, others dark gray
  • Sexes similar

Habitat

These birds live open woodlands or deciduous forests  and can often be found in city parks and wooded urban areas. They generally live in the hollowed out areas of the trees and stumps or in the old nests of other birds.

Status

A common, permanent resident in Atlanta.
