Field Marks

Male:

  • Red forehead, breast and rump
  • Streaked belly and undertail coverts
  • Brown wings and tail
  • Immature male resembles female

Female:

  • Plainer face than male
  • Heavily streaked underparts
  • Brown upperparts  

Habitat

In the eastern U.S., House Finches are most often found in urban and suburban environments. In fact, it is found almost exclusively in areas where buildings and lawns are present. It is also found in the open desert, desert grassland, chaparral, and open coniferous forests in the western U.S.

Status

The House is a common permanent resident in the Atlanta Metro area and is a common visitor to bird feeders.
