Remembering Apollo 12

Fernbank Science Center and the Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium presents a special day of programming on Saturday, November 16, 2019, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 12 mission. The mission successfully landed astronauts Pete Conrad and Alan Bean on the surface of the Moon! There will be special planetarium programs throughout the day. Click here for more information.

Apollo Exhibit

Experience the grand opening of an interactive traveling exhibit that features one of the consoles from the Apollo Mission Control Room at Johnson Space Center. Sit where the flight controllers did and imagine the feeling of anticipation and pride as they guided the Intrepid and Yankee Clipper to their rendezvous with the Moon and return to Earth.

The Exhibit Hall is open on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Admission is free!

Schedule of Events on November 16th, 2019

11:00 a.m. The popular fulldome planetarium show Earth, Moon, Sun. Appropriate for young children.

12:00 p.m. CapCom Go! The Apollo Story, a full dome planetarium feature for family audiences of all ages.

1:00 p.m. (free admission) we present the planetarium short film (10 min) Flight to the Moon: LRO and LCROSS. In addition, hear a special presentation by Georgia Tech Professor Thomas Orlando on how Georgia Tech and Atlanta will play a role returning astronauts to the Moon. 

2:00 p.m. The PLANET-arium Show, our new live-narration voyage through the solar system, that will include a discussion of the past and future exploration of the Moon.

3:00 p.m. The Sky Tonight, our traditional hour-long exploration of the stars and constellations.

4:00 p.m. (free admission) we present The Sounds of Apollo 12. The lights will be brought down low in the planetarium as we remember the historic mission through selected audio of the astronauts' conversations with Mission Control and some highlights of pop-culture in the autumn of 1969. 

Unless indicated above, regular admission does apply for planetarium programs ($7 for adults, $5 for students, seniors, and active military personnel). Groupon purchases will be honored.
