Description
- Long slender body, long neck
- Fur can be light reddish brown, to dark reddish brown to black
- Distinctive white chin
Habits
Minks are solitary, territorial animals and are intolerant of other minks. In times of overpopulation, they control their own numbers by either killing each other through direct conflict or by causing weaker minks to be driven from territory until starvation sets in. They are carnivorous animals, feeding on rodents, fish, crustaceans, amphibians, and birds. They kill vertebrate prey by biting the back of the head or neck, leaving canine puncture marks 9–11 mm apart.
Habitat
Mink are usually are found near water; rivers, lakes, streams, ditches and on marshes. Their dens are normally in tree/shrub cover near water. They can spend some time away from water and can even live near urban areas.
