Description
- Head and body 5 ½ - 5 2/3 in; tail
3 ½ - 4 ½ in.
- Weight 1 ¾ - 2 4/5 oz. (50-79 g)
- Thick soft fur
- Glossy olive-brown above, white to the
skin below
- Folded layer of loose skin along each
side of body, from front leg to hind leg
- Skull has 22 teeth
Habitat
Woodlots and forests of deciduous or mixed deciduous-coniferous trees.
Habits
This and the Northern Flying squirrel are the only strictly nocturnal
squirrels. They feed on a variety of seeds, nuts, insects, bird eggs and
will eat meat if available. They make a nest in an old woodpecker hole,
or build outside nest of leaves, twigs and bark.
