Physical Characteristics

The American Coot's feathers are dark gray, with a white patch under the tail. The bill is also white, with a red swelling along the upper edge. The lobed toes make the coot a powerful swimmer.

Habitat

Coots are freshwater birds and live in the shallows of freshwater lakes, ponds, and marshes.  They are often found living in the manmade ponds of parks or golf courses.

Status

Common in Atlanta during spring and fall migration around local water sources.
