The library is located in the main building of Fernbank Science Center at the end of the first hall past the receptionists' desk. A wide range of materials and services are provided for the benefit of students, teachers and the public. The materials are available for use by anyone for reference use only.
The collection consists primarily of materials dealing with science and technology. A scattering of information on other topics is provided as a resource for research and projects. Astronomy, botany, ecology and horticulture are the "strengths" of the collection. Information is provided in a variety of formats: books, periodicals, and microfiche. Access to scientific articles is available through GALILEO (Georgia Learning Online).
The library receives subscriptions to a wide variety of journals and newsletters. The current year's issues are displayed on open shelves. After the year and/or volume is complete, these are shelved with the books of the same subject. In many cases the issues are bound first for the convenience of the user. Some titles are purchased in microfiche format. These are accessed with the microfiche/microfilm reader/printer. For the public, microfiche prints are available at a cost of 10¢ each.
A standard copier is also located in the library. It has the capability of reduction and enlargement. It is intended primarily for public use and copies are 10¢ each.
The library staff is available to help patrons who come to the Center and will answer some questions over the telephone. Such specialized materials as the U. S. Zip Code Directory, the Museum Directory, Webster's Unabridged Dictionary and a variety of encyclopedias help provide answers to queries. Assistance with detailed research work is provided to anyone who comes to the library.
